The Hungarian Pastry Shop is a cozy, neighborhood cafe that makes the big city feel like your home. If you want a classic NYC experience, then come here. If you want to be a regular somewhere, then this is an easy place to be known. The employees have regular hours and very little turnover. They open promptly at 7:30 am every weekday. There are always a few regulars who walk in right at 7:30 am everyday. They say good morning and the employees bring over the regulars' orders without having to ask what they want. I hope they pay their employees really well because the employees make this place special. It used to be cash only, but now they accept cards. There is no internet here, so you'll need to use a hotspot on your phone. In my opinion, this is honestly part of the charm. You'll always see caffeinated Columbia students/professors chatting or getting work done. The tables both inside and outside fill up quickly, but you can usually find a spot if you wait or share or table. The pastries are good. I recommend the iced latte with sugar. Stay golden, Hungarian Pastry Shop!
This is a staple neighborhood stop for a dessert pick me up. They have a great selection of desserts and pastries and you can smell the freshly baked goods from a block away. It's a nice shop to sit in and have a conversation with someone, though it wouldn't be an ideal place to get any sort of work done because the tables are so close together and it's usually pretty social inside. My morning staple includes a peach or the cheese danish. The cheese danish is slightly heavier but both go well with coffee. A post-lunch dessert for me is either a carrot cake, cheesecake or chocolate cake - depends on if I'm having tea or another coffee in the afternoon. The carrot cake is a just right dessert pick that's not too sweet and a good balance between cake and frosting. The other two I find to be more indulgent options for special days or especially long work days that need a treat. I find that there's a good balance of savory and sweet options whenever I come here and the service is usually pretty fast. There are definitely peak times for the shop when the lines are out the door (usually before school, lunch and after school) but if you come in between, you can get your stuff pretty quickly.
Lovely place for Magyar pasty and ambiance. My wife orders in Hungarian, and the people are so sweet. The pastries are delicious!
Absolutely LOVE this place! It is always packed and everyone is cozy/next to one another but the vibes are just so amazing! The coffee & pastries are so so incredibly delicious!!! Highly recommend :)
Would recc, just probably didn't order the right items. Good cafe, cozy ambiance many tables and many people sipping coffee and working on their laptops. Waited in line for about 25 minutes, and ordered an almond croissant and poppyseed strudel, wasn't very impressed with either
I don't come here often, but when I do, it's one of the most special places to sit and have pastries and coffee. If you observed, they must have the most privileged and rudest patrons on the planet (mainly parents that are in town -- students are usually great) My 5 stars is partly to the fresh pastries and partly to their great staff!
AMAZING. If there's one thing to get it would be the Carrot Cake. The cream cheese melts in your mouth! We also tried the almond horn, chocolate eclair, and lemon coconut cake. All were amazing but the Carrot Cake was phenomenal. The line was out the door and all seats packed, it's decently loud inside. but the service was fast and employees were kind. Would recommend taking the food to Central Park nearby. Their coffee is also good, I got a hint of almond extract in mine which tasted quite interesting - in a good way!!
It was pretty good! the food was a wide assortments of different pastries, cakes, and desserts. it was pretty packed when i went and the lines were hecfic. after we ordered to dine in the tables weren't clean and everywhere was a mess. We opted to sit at a table and when our food came the waitress who was also the cashier came and gave us food then cleaned up the table. i feel like this place might be understaffed i overall am not a fan of the ambiance of the place because it's kind of confusing where the line starts and where to sit but next time i'll be sure to grab the food to go because those pastries were amazing! i got lemon cheesecake and wild cherry cheese pastry. It's so good i'm dreaming about it
It was early weekday evening, this shop had a line outside. I was shocked that customers didn't mind waiting outside in the heat. When I was in front of the cashier, I requested a Linzer torte. She asked me what flavor. I answered "raspberry." I also brought a cup of iced coffee to go with it. She then asked if it was to go or to stay. I requested to stay. I gave her my name. She told me to get a seat and the server would come by with my order. It was dark inside the seating area. When the server came by, I asked if there was Wi-Fi password. She informed they don't have Wi-Fi. The cookie was delicious. It was soft. The jam was tart and sweet. Coffee was strong and bitter. I would come back here again.
